Day 105: Mr. Show – The Story of Everest

We close out this week’s celebration of all things Mr. Show with a sketch that is the exact opposite of yesterday’s featured sketch, Pre-Taped Call In Show. Yesterday’s sketch required viewers to actually think about what was going on, while today’s sketch, The Story of the Story of Everest, tells one joke over and over again. I’ve read complaints that this sketch isn’t funny and it just goes on too long, but I think that’s the point. It’s impossible for me not to laugh every single time Jay Johnston falls down. He’s a master of physical comedy and the show’s secret weapon. Whenever Jay shows up in a sketch, I know it’s going to be an especially good one.

I had a lot of fun with this week’s blog posts. Whenever I take on a week-long event, I always produce things I’m especially proud of. I should just do week-long events every week. What other television program/movie appeals to my readers??? I’ve got it! Next week, get ready for drawings of the cast of Jersey Shore! Yeah!

Day 104: Mr. Show – Pre-Taped Call In Show

We’re getting close to the end of Mr. Show week here, and today features what may be my favorite sketch of the entire series. If you take a second and think about the concept behind this and how committed they are to telling this joke (pay attention to the televisions at the end of the sketch), you really get an idea of how smart these guys were. They knew how to do incredibly goofy slapstick (which we’ll focus on tomorrow) and intelligent, subversive humor, but with Pre-Taped Call In Show with Ken Doral, they created what may be their most blissfully serene moment.

We’ll close out this celebration of Mr. Show tomorrow with some laughs, some falling and some thimbles. See you then!

Day 103: Mr. Show – Ronnie Dobbs

Ronnie Dobbs is a real American hero. He’s out there, fighting the good fight, bringing joy to the masses. And he’s got a beautiful singing voice.

I hope by now you’ve developed a hankering for Mr. Show, if you didn’t already have one. I’ve got two more days of posts dedicated to this amazing program, both of which will focus on two of my favorite sketches and quite possibly their two greatest sketches (this is up for debate, of course). Tune in tomorrow and see what they are. If you have any ideas what they might be, feel free to post your thoughts in the comments below and we’ll see if you’re right.

Also, Nick has posted a brand-new installment of Betsy & Waffles. It’s approved for mature adults and immature grandparents only. Check it out as soon as it’s posted.

Day 101: Mr. Show – Larry Kleist: Rapist

One of the best things about Mr. Show is that it could wring comedy from just about any subject matter, no matter how taboo, and that’s why “Larry Kleist: Rapist” is one of my favorite sketches. I don’t know what that says about me, but here we are… As for today’s piece, I think I captured Larry’s enthusiasm for insurance and his assigned state-licensed public warning engineer’s distaste for his current position.

Also, over at Nick’s blog, Part 2 of Betsy & Waffles’ “Wet Willies” adventure has been posted (hereby referred to as “The Wet Willies 2: The Legend of Sagan’s Gold”). Because it’s a sublime masterpiece and really needs to be seen as a whole, I’m requesting you click here. We are obviously quite insane.

Day 100: Mr. Show – Three Times One Minus One

I hereby proclaim this “Mr. Show” week on Josh Is Lost. I had a lot of fun with F.F. Woodycooks yesterday, and since I’m waste-deep in re-watching every season, I might as well stretch this out for a while. I like these weekly series; they give me something to shoot for every day instead of twiddling my thumbs trying to come up with an idea. With today’s piece, we focus our attention on Three Times One Minus One, or TTOMO to their fans, the geniuses behind the classic R&B jam “Ewww, Girl, Ewww“.

As for who might be showing up during this week’s Mr. Show-case (get it?), I’d prefer not to say anything concrete in case I decide to change my mind. However, I will say that some of my choices might surprise you as I might not pick who you’re expecting, but I guess it’s a given that Ronnie Dobbs will show up at some point (or will he?). As for others, you’ll just have to wait and see.

Also, I somehow forgot to mention that there’s a new installment of Betsy & Waffles over at Nick’s blog. It’s a part one of a two-parter, our first foray into continuity in the series, so bear with us. It’s sure to be genuine fun for the entire family, and that’s something you can take to the bank! Honestly, though, I can’t express how happy I am to be actively involved in a web comic finally, and I couldn’t have asked for a better artist/co-writer than Nick. Well, I could’ve, but I think Nick would’ve gotten mad at me. Ba-zing! But seriously, folks…

Also, also, as of today, I’ve reached 100 days worth of postings. I honestly thought I’d crap out around Day 60, but I’ve held strong. Sure, some of the posts have been less stellar than others, but this has been a great learning experience so far. I’ve got something fun planned to celebrate the first 100 Posts, but I haven’t finished it up yet, so hopefully it’ll get it up here before the weekend.

Until then, thanks to those of you who have supported me in this endeavor and for those who read the site everyday. And if this is your first time here, welcome. Enjoy. Tell your friends.

Day 99: Mr. Show – F. F. Woodycooks

“Have you seen this man? He’s wanted by crooks everywhere for trying to stop crime. His name is… ME!” If you recognize that speech and the character to the right, then you’ll realize that I’ve been watching a lot of Mr. Show with Bob & David lately. One of my absolute favorite characters is F.F. Woodycooks, crime thwarter-slash-ice cream vendor. If you’re not sure who I’m talking about, watch this. If you didn’t laugh, I’m not sure if we can be friends anymore.

“We’re gonna shake the Crime Stick!”
